Sanath Gunathilake is a distinguished figure in Sri Lankan cinema, celebrated for his versatility as an actor, director, and screenwriter. Born on October 27, 1955, in Mulgampola, Kandy, he grew up in a middle-class family where his father, Hector Gunatilake, practiced law, and his mother, Grace Goonetileke, was a teacher. His early exposure to films, often accompanying his father to the cinema, ignited a passion for the arts that would shape his future career.

Gunathilake received his education at Kingswood College in Kandy. After completing his studies, he initially worked as a chemistry teacher. However, his enduring interest in cinema led him to Colombo, seeking opportunities in the film industry.



In 1978, he made his cinematic debut with “Situ Kumariyo,” directed by Vijaya Dharmasiri. Although this was his first film, “Ganga Addara,” released prior to “Situ Kumariyo,” brought him significant recognition. His portrayal of Aravinda Jayasena in Tissa Abeysekara’s “Viragaya” is particularly acclaimed, earning him Best Actor awards at major Sri Lankan film festivals.


Throughout his career, Gunathilake has showcased his range by taking on diverse roles in films such as “Kedapathaka Chaya,” “Palama Yata,” “Doorkada Marawa,” and “Rajya Sevaya Pinisai.” He also appeared alongside notable actors like Vijaya Kumaratunga and Ranjan Ramanayake in commercial hits including “Koti Waligaya,” “Dinuma,” and “Nommara 17.”
Expanding his contributions to cinema, Gunathilake ventured into directing with his debut film “Ekamath Eka Rataka” in 2009. He continued to explore storytelling through direction with “Sinahawa Atharin” in 2015.


Beyond the silver screen, Gunathilake engaged in politics, serving as a member of the Western Provincial Council with the United National Party and later as the media head for President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.
Sanath Gunathilake’s enduring dedication to the arts has left an indelible mark on Sri Lankan cinema, inspiring both audiences and aspiring filmmakers.
