Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya met with education authorities from the North Central Province to discuss significant reforms aimed at improving the region’s education sector on Monday (23). The meeting, held at the North Central Provincial Council Auditorium, highlighted several challenges, including inadequate data on school dropouts and students pursuing higher education.

Dr. Amarasuriya announced that with the introduction of the Citizen Digital Identity Card, a new digital ID for schoolchildren would include comprehensive information, such as education and health data, making it easier to track educational progress in the future. She emphasized the need for accurate data to guide decisions and confirmed that the government’s education reforms will be implemented by 2026.

A key topic of discussion was addressing teacher vacancies in the province. It was noted that existing policies and circulars are sufficient to manage this issue. The Prime Minister also mentioned that the 619 billion rupees allocated for education in this year’s budget would be fully utilized for quality projects that support children’s education. She highlighted the need for improved school infrastructure, including drinking water, sanitation facilities, and internet access, as well as the completion of unfinished school buildings.

The Prime Minister also proposed the provision of vouchers for schoolgirls over 13 years old to purchase sanitary napkins and stressed the importance of proper disposal methods. Additionally, she outlined plans to establish five sports schools across the island, offering athletes the necessary facilities and support.

Other discussions included creating inclusive environments for children with special needs, ensuring mental health support for students, and providing proper nutrition and care for athletes in a formal educational setting.

The meeting was attended by various stakeholders, including MP Nimal Palihawadana, Governor Wasantha Jinadasa, and key education officials from the North Central Province.
