Let’s pay our respects to those heroes first – President A.K.D

The 77th National Independence Day celebrations commenced this morning (04) at Independence Square under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Addressing the nation, the President emphasized the need to go beyond political, ethnic, and social divisions to achieve full economic and social freedom. He highlighted that true independence is not merely a historical milestone but an ongoing struggle that requires collective effort.

“We have come a long way to celebrate the 77th Independence Day. Many people we know or don’t know have sacrificed their lives for this freedom in various ways. Let’s pay our respects to those heroes first. While we have come a long way, the journey toward economic, social, and cultural liberation is not over,” he stated.

President Dissanayake urged all Sri Lankans—farmers, teachers, health workers, security forces, and public servants—to recognize their vital roles in shaping a prosperous and equitable nation. He stressed that Sri Lanka must embrace modern advancements while preserving its cultural identity and national dignity.

“Freedom is not just about governance; it is about creating a society of equality, dignity, and opportunity. Let us walk this path together and make Sri Lanka a beacon of democracy and justice in the modern world,” he concluded.
