Victoria Police in Australia is expecting at least 400 officers to leave the force by the end of the year to capitalise on the special entitlement, which has been removed from the police enterprise bargaining agreement that will be voted on at the end of this month.
Hundreds of senior police and veteran investigators are considering finishing their careers early following a controversial pay deal. In this situation ends a ‘golden handshake worth’ a year’s salary in cash if an officer goes on sick leave ahead of retirement.
However, one high-ranking official who received more than $200,000 after being found unfit for duty has taken a high-paying job in the private sector within months, according to the ‘The Age’ newspaper.
Shane Andrew Patton APM is an Australian police officer and as of June 2020, the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police. Shane Patton has left the role of Victoria Police chief commissioner, after a 45-year career in the force.
Victoria Police chief commissioner Shane Patton has “stepped away” from the role, effective immediately. Patton issued a statement on Sunday evening, as did the state government.
Prime Minister Jacinta Allen said Rick Nugent would take on the role as acting chief commissioner given the current situation.
Rick Nugent, who was most recently Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner, was considered a leading candidate to replace Patton before Sunday night’s announcement that he would take the job in an acting capacity.
Allan said Nugent would start in the role as soon as practicable, after he relinquishes his emergency services position. Until Nugent can take over the role, Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam will fill in.
“I have this evening advised government that given the current circumstances surrounding my position, I have decided to step away from the role effective immediately,” Patton said on 17th Sunday.
