Putin’s Presidential Journey

By. Ashoka Peiris

The current leader of Russia, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, is an iron man who reawakened a sleeping Russia after former presidents Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin.

We inquired a little about Vladimir Putin, who has become a headache for the current western leaders as well as their protector NATO.

It is no secret that the cold war between America and Russia became the main reason that caused this situation in the western countries and their political agendas with societies.

Mr. Putin’s journey to the position of President of Russia is the greatest honour the Russian government has given to a man of faith. It is a recognition of not only Russians but also foreign journalists that he is a person who fulfills any duty assigned to him without any deficiency.

In 1975, he graduated with a degree in law from Leningrad State University. He later earned a Ph.D. degree in economics. After graduation, Mr. Putin was assigned to work in the KGB. From 1985 to 1990, he worked in East Germany.

Putin showed his ability and confidence to the Russian authorities through his knowledge of his country, political visions, passion for the country, and 16 years of working as an international intelligence officer.

In June 1991, he became chairman of the St. Petersburg City Council’s International Relations Committee and in 1994, he combined this post with the position of First Deputy Chairman of the St. Petersburg City Government (First Deputy Mayor).

In 1996, he moved to Moscow to join the administration of President Boris Yeltsin. Also in March 1997, he became deputy head of the Executive Office of the President (Presidential Administration) and head of the Central Supervision and Inspections Directorate.

In July 1998, he was appointed director of the Federal Security Service and, as of March 1999, he combined this position with that of Secretary of the Security Council.

Putting was appointed as the Prime Minister in August 1999, and he became acting President on December 31, 1999. During this period, not only government officials but also common people were talking about Putin.

On March 26, 2000, he was elected President of Russia and was inaugurated on May 7, 2000.

After Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika, the Western camp seized power in the face of what happened to the Russian Federation. They thought that Putin was just another president who extended his arms to depend on the West.
