Minister Vijitha Herath will be addressing at the 58th session in UNHRC

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vijitha Herath, has announced his intention to represent Sri Lanka at the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland today. The Minister is expected to give his speech around 3.30pm Sri Lanka time.

The UN Human Rights Council is the principal intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe, and for addressing and action on human rights violations around the globe.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath will be attending the 58th session and engaging in key discussions on human rights and international cooperation.

On the sidelines, Minister has held a bilateral meeting with, H.E. Lord Collins of Highbury, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, UK.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath met the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, H.E. Ms. Varsen Aghabekian, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the State of Palestine, and other leaders.

Tomorrow, he will address the UNHRC, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and human rights.

The previous governments paid little attention to the people’s issues in the north areas, hoping for votes from the people of the south.

But in this year’s general election, the people of the North and East cast their votes for the National People’s Power with renewed hope.
